Part 107 Recurrent Training: Rules, Test Format, and Deadlines (2026)

Part 107 remote pilots must complete recurrent training every 24 calendar months. Under §107.65, if you let that window lapse you may no longer exercise the privileges of a remote pilot in command: your certificate becomes invalid for flying until you complete recurrent training. For most pilots, the requirement is met by passing the recurrent knowledge test (recurrent UAG), which has 48 questions, a 72-minute time limit, and a 70% passing score. What §107.65 Requires

FAA regulation 14 CFR §107.65 requires that, within the previous 24 calendar months, you accomplish one of the following: pass the initial aeronautical knowledge test, complete recurrent training covering the knowledge areas in §107.73, or, for Part 61 pilots with a current flight review, complete the alternative training in §107.74.

Why Calendar Months Matter

The regulation counts calendar months rather than days. Training completed in August 2026 keeps you current through the last day of August 2028, whatever the exact date you passed. Mark the last day of your 24th month on your calendar and schedule well before it.

The Recurrent Test Format (2026)

The recurrent UAG exam is shorter than the initial test, but the passing standard is the same 70%.

• 48 multiple-choice questions, answered in 72 minutes.
• 70% passing score: you need at least 34 correct answers.
• Administered in person at FAA-approved knowledge testing centers.

How It Differs From the Initial Test

The initial UAG exam has 60 questions and 120 minutes; the recurrent test has fewer questions (48) and less time (72 minutes). What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

Miss the 24-month window and you cannot act as remote pilot in command until you complete recurrent training. Your certificate does not renew itself, and flying without current recurrent training means operating without a valid remote pilot certificate, which can lead to FAA enforcement action and civil penalties.

Plan ahead: schedule your test or online course a few weeks before your expiration month, and never fly on expired currency.
