Remote ID Explained: FAA Requirements Every Drone Pilot Must Know
Published August 27, 2026 · Updated August 27, 2026 · Sky107 Team

Remote ID is the FAA's digital license plate for drones, and under 14 CFR Part 89 every drone that is registered or required to be registered must broadcast its identity and location while flying. Drones produced after September 16, 2022 must have standard Remote ID built in, and all operators had to comply by September 16, 2023 (§89.105). You comply in one of three ways: standard Remote ID, a broadcast module, or flying inside an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA).
What Is Remote ID?
Remote ID lets the FAA, law enforcement, and other parties identify a drone in flight without radar. From takeoff to shutdown, the drone broadcasts identification and position data over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The broadcast is local, so it does not require an internet connection.
Under §89.305, a standard Remote ID message includes the aircraft identity (serial number or session ID), the drone's latitude, longitude, altitude, and velocity, the control station's location and altitude, a time mark, and emergency status.
Who Must Comply
Part 89 applies to anyone operating an unmanned aircraft that is registered or required to be registered under 14 CFR parts 47 or 48 (§89.101). That covers virtually every drone over 0.55 pounds, plus all drones flown under Part 107, because Part 107 requires registration regardless of weight. Even a sub-250g drone flown commercially must broadcast Remote ID.
The Key Dates
- January 15, 2021: the FAA publishes the Remote ID final rule
- September 16, 2022: newly produced drones must have standard Remote ID
- September 16, 2023: every operator must comply (§89.105)
The Three Ways to Comply
Standard Remote ID (§89.110)
Most drones sold since 2022 have Remote ID built in. The aircraft automatically broadcasts the §89.305 message elements from takeoff to shutdown, and you may not disable the equipment.
Remote ID Broadcast Module (§89.115)
Drones without built-in Remote ID can carry an add-on broadcast module. The module's serial number must be linked to the aircraft's registration. Verify the module is broadcasting before takeoff; if the broadcast stops in flight, you must land as soon as practicable.
FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (§89.115)
A FRIA is a designated area where drones without Remote ID may fly. You must remain inside the FRIA boundaries for the whole flight and keep the drone within visual line of sight. Only community-based organizations and educational institutions can apply for a FRIA.
Exceptions You Should Know
- Sub-250g recreational flights: drones under 0.55 pounds flown recreationally are exempt from registration, so Part 89 does not apply. The same drone flown under Part 107 must be registered and must comply.
- Aircraft under Part 91 transmitting ADS-B Out: excepted from Part 89 (§89.101(b)).
- Research and compliance operations: the FAA may authorize flights without Remote ID for aeronautical research or to demonstrate compliance (§89.120).
- Government and home-built aircraft: outside the design and production requirements (§89.501).

Stay Compliant, Stay Flying
Check Remote ID status as part of every preflight, and confirm new drones have standard Remote ID before you buy. For the full certification path, read our Part 107 study guide and pair it with weather briefing skills. Understand the airspace where Remote ID applies by learning to read sectional charts, then review the study checklist and the FAQ as you prepare.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Remote ID for drones?
Remote ID is a broadcast system under 14 CFR Part 89 that transmits a drone's identity and location so the FAA, law enforcement, and other parties can identify it in flight.
Do I need Remote ID on my drone?
If your drone is registered or required to be registered with the FAA, yes. That includes every Part 107 drone and most drones weighing more than 0.55 pounds.
Do sub-250g drones need Remote ID?
Only if they are registered. Sub-250g drones flown recreationally are exempt from registration, but the same drone flown under Part 107 must be registered and must comply.
What are the Remote ID compliance dates?
Drones produced after September 16, 2022 must have standard Remote ID, and all operators had to comply by September 16, 2023.
Can I fly my drone without Remote ID?
Yes, inside an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA), or with an FAA authorization for aeronautical research or compliance demonstration. Otherwise your drone must broadcast.
Does Remote ID require the internet?
No. Remote ID is broadcast locally over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The final rule removed the internet-based network transmission requirement.
